Restoration & Repurposing of Industrial Building

My diploma thesis design project (currently in progress) is a proposal for the restoration of a complex of old tobacco warehouses in my hometown of Kavala. Kavala was known across Europe for the tobacco processing that took place in the city in the late 19th century until the middle of the 20th century.

The restoration project focuses on re-purposing one of the largest tobacco warehouse complexes in the city as a student center for the university. The program consists of dormitories, community spaces, workshop areas, a library and a cafeteria for the students.

One of the many challenges of the project is redesigning the fallen roofs of the two main warehouses and the wooden structural system that has been partially destroyed and exposed to weather conditions. The integration of the restored warehouse into the modern urban environment of the city poses the closing challenge of the project.
